There are around a thousand species of wild rhododendron, five hundred of which can be found in the 46-hectare Rhododendron Park, a spectacular sight when they are in bloom. The "botanika" complex - a fascinating way to discover the world of plants - is also in the park.

Bürgerpark is one of Germany's best preserved country parks and, with its adjacent woodland, covers a total area of more than 200 hectares.

The city's ramparts were transformed into a green belt after the fortifications were dismantled at the beginning of the 18th century when the embankments lost their military function.
