Arte & cultura

Customs and traditions are firmly established in Todtmoos and they are still observed with great affection. Don't take our word for it though, simply look out for the Todtmoos Tracht, a traditional costume that can be seen at lots of events and occasions. The handsome Bollenhut, a distinctive, traditional hat with large pom-poms, has become virtually synonymous with the romance of the Black Forest. One of the main attractions is the pilgrimage church, which to this day remains the focus of spiritual life in Todtmoos. Demonstrations of traditional handicrafts in the local history museum are also popular.

Pilgrimage Church
Todtmoos has a long pilgrimage tradition. Pilgrims have been coming to the Wehra Valley since the 15th century. Even today pilgrimages regularly take place in summer. A shining example of this tradition and an extra-special attraction is the baroque pilgrimage church that dates back to 1632. It has elaborate ornamentation and a magnificent baroque-style interior. Historic stalls where pilgrims used to stop to eat, can still be found on the steep ascent up to the church.

Local history museum
Known locally as the "Heimethus", this museum has been arranged with great attention to detail. Housed in a striking 250-year-old Black Forest house with a huge overhanging roof and shingle-covered exterior, it chronicles more than 700 years of history in the region. Visitors are taken on a journey into the past, where they can really begin to understand what life used to be like for people who lived and worked in the region. Events and exhibitions are regularly staged in the museum's cultural centre.

The Black Forest "Tracht"
Traditional customs and practices are still a common sight all over the Black Forest. Festive occasions in particular see many people don the traditional costume known as the Tracht. Among the best-known of these is the one with the distinctive Bollenhut, a traditional hat. The Bollenhut is an essential feature of the traditional Black Forest costume worn at festivals, and this can be at least partly attributed to Duchess Luise's penchant for the splendid costumes worn in Gutach. The Bollenhut has been part of the ladies' costume since around 1750. Unmarried women wear it with red pom-poms, while those worn by married women have black pom-poms.
