A nine men's morris or mill board has a square in the middle surrounded by concentric squares connected by lines. This was the layout used for Italian Renaissance towns and in 1599 Freudenstadt was designed in the same way by Heinrich Schickhardt, architect at the Württemberg court. The streets of the town still follow the same pattern and the market place, virtually a perfect square shape, is one of the largest in Germany. This legendary lake is an extremely popular beauty spot. 17 metres deep and 1,036 metres above sea level, it is the deepest and highest cirque lake in the Black Forest with the 100-metre high face of Mount Hornisgrinde, the wall of the cirque, towering above it. According to legend the lake is home to a water nymph who promises to help people lost by the lake at night, only to dance, sing and play with them. Incidentally Lake Mummelsee gets its name from the many water lilies which grow in it, known as Mummel in the local dialect.
