The Black Forest is always fun, summer or winter, whether you're interested in traditional tours or trendy new sports. The Black Forest Spa Route will guide you around the hot springs of the northern Black Forest. A fascinating fact: the streets in the town of Freudenstadt are laid out in the shape of a board for playing the game Nine Men's Morris. The unusual location of Lake Mummelsee probably gave rise to its water nymph legend.

Black Forest Spa Route
This 270 kilometre, circular scenic route tours the spas in the idyllic hills and valleys of the northern Black Forest. No other region has as many hydrotherapy, climatic, thermal and mineral health resorts as this area, one of Germany's largest nature reserves. Whatever you do, don't fail to call in at one of these magnificent spa resorts. Leisure and recreation must be fun in order to reinvigorate and improve fitness levels, and this range of leisure facilities has something to suit every taste.

Freudenstadt
A nine men's morris or mill board has a square in the middle surrounded by concentric squares connected by lines. This was the layout used for Italian Renaissance towns and in 1599 Freudenstadt was designed in the same way by Heinrich Schickhardt, architect at the Württemberg court. The streets of the town still follow the same pattern and the market place, virtually a perfect square shape, is one of the largest in Germany. This small town with its fascinating history is well worth a visit.

Lake Mummelsee
This legendary lake is an extremely popular beauty spot. 17 metres deep and 1,036 metres above sea level, it is the deepest and highest cirque lake in the Black Forest with the 100-metre high face of Mount Hornisgrinde, the wall of the cirque, towering above it. According to legend the lake is home to a water nymph who promises to help people lost by the lake at night, only to dance, sing and play with them. Incidentally Lake Mummelsee gets its name from the many water lilies which grow in it, known as Mummel in the local dialect.
