Arte & cultura

In Landau you can find many fine examples of art nouveau architecture, the most striking of which is the festival hall, one of the most important theatre buildings from the art nouveau period in south-west Germany. It was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century and is today a listed building. After much costly renovation work it has been restored to its former glory.
The oldest parts of this three-storey, four-winged building date back to the 15th century. The inner courtyard is completely enclosed on the first and second floors by wooden balconies, which give this space a rather special atmosphere. The "Zur Blum" inn has been located in the building since the 17th century. It was also where Anne Frank's grandfather was born and has now become a place where people can meet, share ideas and foster greater understanding. There is a permanent exhibition on the history of the Jews in Landau, exhibits relating to the Sinti and Romany people in the Palatinate region as well as special exhibitions on regional art and culture.
The former home of the important Palatinate painter Heinrich Strieffler and his daughter Marie became the property of the town after her death. It is constructed in an art déco style and has essentially been preserved as she left it, creating a remarkable snapshot of middle-class life at the time. The large studio in the attic is especially impressive. One floor is reserved for special exhibitions of paintings by deceased artists from the Palatinate region .
