Red sculpture outside the Media Museum, Eifel Touristik Agentur NRW GmbH
Established as a foundation in 1989 and opened to the public in 1997, the ZKM Media Museum at the Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe is probably the world's first museum specialising exclusively in interactive art. It owns the largest collection of interactive media artworks in the world.

Focus on interactive media art
The ZKM Media Museum at the Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe is the only cultural institution of its kind in the world. Art and new media are thoroughly interwoven here. The media museum is the first museum designed to be completely interactive. It focuses on works from the new genre of interactive media art, and illustrates and investigates their impact. Installations and environments employ different strategies to draw the viewer in and use new technologies in a wide range of creative ways.

The works of renowned artists such as Bruce Naumann, Steina Vasulka, Rebecca Horn, Gordon Matta-Clark, Wolf Vostell, Nam June Paik, Stephan von Huene, Marie-Jo Lafontaine and Fabrizio Plessi offer an amazing panorama of media art. In addition to permanent exhibitions such as "Masterpieces of media art", "Algorithmic revolution" and "World of games", the Centre for Art and Media also stages fascinating special exhibitions. The media library provides visitors with an extensive collection of specialist CDs, video tapes and art books and an interactive art gallery shows a mix of pioneering works and the latest developments in media art. The artworks are created by the interaction of visitors so they are constantly changing and always new.
