In Wernigerode Castle visitors can see up-close how the aristocrats used to live. A contrast to this is provided by the "Kleinstes Haus" (smallest house), which shows how ordinary families used to use to live, while the Museum for Aviation and Technology is a 'must' for those interested in all aspects of flight. Built originally as a stronghold, this castle was enhanced to become Renaissance fortress in the 16th century, finally being rebuilt as a stately residence in the 17th century. Today it is one of Germany's foremost interior museums. In two halls and an open-air space, the Museum of Aviation and Technology showcases around 20 demilitarised and restored aircraft and helicopters, a variety of models such as the Starfighter F 104, engines, individual parts and also a mobile radar station. "Kleinstes Haus" lives up to its name as a really tiny house. Built around 1800 with a floor space of just 10 square metres, it serves as a museum today. At one time, nine people lived together in this narrow building that almost seems to be wedged between two other town houses. The kitchen and attic of the house can also be viewed.
