Wernigerode is the "colourful town" in the legendary Harz. With its medieval timber-framed architecture, winding alleyways and numerous historical buildings, the small town of Wernigerode radiates an extra-special charm. Particularly impressive buildings include the town hall, the Gadenstedt Family’s House and Krummel's House. When it comes to timber-framed architecture, the Wernigerode town hall is a real gem. First appearing in records in 1277, it was once used as a courthouse as well as a type of venue for medieval feasts and festivities. This house built by Dietrich von Gadenstedt in 1582 on the south side of the parish church courtyard is notable for its High Renaissance-style oriel window that protrudes from the building. This cantilevered bay is lavishly decorated with beams and ornate abutments. Even the gabled windows are styled in an highly artistic fashion.Krummel House
The Krummel House in the Breite Strasse is particularly noteworthy. The timber-framed front is concealed completely behind a carved wooden façade covered with inscriptions and detailed reliefs depicting among other things people, animals and a town of many spires – it is a true gem of medieval carving.
