Natureza e áreas verdes

Let your gaze roam over the Rhön's remarkable landscape of bare-topped hills, delightful valleys and moors, with its fascinating flora and fauna. Long ridges alternate with rolling plateaus and hilltops. The gentle, treeless slopes of Mount Wasserkuppe in the Hessian Rhön nature reserve are a mecca for gliders. The Fulda Palace garden with its orangery and maze has its own special charm.

Hessian Rhön nature reserve
The Hessian Rhön nature reserve is located in the north-west of the Rhön region between Hünfeld and Gersfeld. The landscape alternates between fields, meadows, hedgerows and woods, and looks rather like a country park. Gazing into the distance from the virtually treeless plateaus you see valleys, meadows, strange upland moors and striking basalt boulders, pretty little towns and isolated villages. Gliders soar silently above Mount Wasserkuppe, at 950 metres the highest peak in the region and the birthplace of gliding.

Gersfeld wildlife park
Gersfeld wildlife park is located in an idyllic meadow valley surrounded by forest where predominantly local animals can be seen in their natural habitat. In the petting zoo you can come into close contact with many of these creatures. You can also feed the animals with food from special feeding stations along the way. Raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, pheasants, peacocks and partridges can be observed up close.

Fulda Palace garden and orangery
This baroque-style palace garden lies between the palace and orangery. It was converted into an English country garden in the 19th century. The garden is one of Fulda's municipal parks. In front of the orangery, which was designed by the architect Maximilian von Welsch, is the Floravase sculpture. It was created in 1728 by the Bamberg sculptor Johann Friedrich Humbach and is one of the most beautiful baroque sculptures in Germany.
