The baroque town of Fulda is situated close to Gersfeld in the charming valley basin of the Fulda river between the foothills of the Rhön and Vogelsberg hills. The town boasts some splendid baroque buildings such as the former electoral palace and garden, the cathedral and a nobleman's palace, all of which are particularly fine examples of baroque architecture. The Carolingian Church of St. Michael, one of the oldest churches in Germany, is also well worth a visit.

Fulda Palace
Fulda Palace is a former residence of prince abbots and prince bishops, and is currently the seat of the town council. It was completed in 1721 according to plans by the architect Johann Dientzenhofer for the re-design and extension of the former Renaissance palace. You can view historical rooms such as the Imperial Hall, Prince's Hall and the Mirror Halls with their splendid plaster work. The Mirror Halls also house a fine collection of Fulda porcelain. In addition, there is a state apartment dedicated to the German physicist Ferdinand Braun (1850-1918), inventor of the cathode-ray oscilloscope ("Braun tube") and wireless telegraphy. This Fulda-born scientist was awarded the Nobel prize for Physics in 1909.

Fulda Cathedral and Cathedral Museum
This baroque cathedral, constructed between 1704 and 1712 by Johann Dientzenhofer, is located on Domplatz square to the west of the palace. The high altar contains the tomb of St. Boniface who died in 754 AD and is still a place of pilgrimage today. Sacred vestments, liturgical equipment and reliquaries of St. Boniface can be viewed in the adjoining Cathedral Museum.

St. Michael's Church, Fulda
St. Michael's Church, one of the oldest churches in Germany, is situated to the north of the cathedral. The rotunda and crypt date back to the year 822 and the church also has an imposing square tower. It was constructed as a chapel for Fulda's Benedictine abbey cemetery which was once located here.
