The Solling-Vogler nature reserve covers an area of around 53,000 hectares between the Harz and Weserbergland hills, forming north Germany's largest mixed forest upland area, a paradise for stags and roe deer, wild boar and mouflon sheep, as well as a host of rare flora. Lake Steinhude lies 53km from Hamlyn. At around 30 square kilometres it is the largest lake in north-west Germany and gives its name to the surrounding nature reserve. The large lake and the area's diverse scenery make the reserve a popular holiday destination.
