The narrow alleyways of the medieval old town are lined with a succession of fascinating houses. Aside from magnificent half-timbered buildings such as the canons' house, patrician's house and Lücking's House, you can also marvel at Hamlyn's many Weser Renaissance buildings. The Pied Piper house, Leisthaus, the house of Tobias von Dempter and the Wedding House are real architectural jewels. Other examples of medieval architecture include the two town towers and the town wall.
The minster was constructed in around 812 and is the oldest church in the town. It is thought that Hamlyn was founded as an abbey before it was annexed to the diocese of Fulda in 826.
Bungelosenstrasse is the stuff of legends. According to the tale of the Pied Piper, this is the main scene of events. He played his flute and lured the children along this street and out of the town, never to be seen again. Since then it has been forbidden to play any kind of music in the street and this is why it is called Bungelosenstrasse ("the street of no drums").
