The remains of a magnificent Roman villa have been discovered in Nenning. Its wonderful Roman mosaic floor is one of the largest and most beautiful anywhere north of the Alps. Nell House, a residence for the Trier Cathedral Chapter until the French Revolution, is also worth seeing. Nearby Mettlach, a town famous for its ceramics, evokes a sense of history, especially the Middle Ages, the baroque era and the French Revolution.

Roman mosaic, Nenning
The Roman mosaic floor in Nenning is the largest (160m²) and best preserved in northern Europe. It was discovered in 1852 when a farmer digging up a turnip field stumbled across tiny fragments of mosaic that turned out to be part of a magnificent Roman mosaic floor. Parts of the splendid villa that once belonged to a wealthy Roman estate owner have also been preserved. The mosaic consists of around three million tiny stones. It depicts scenes from tournaments in the Roman amphitheatre, music-making and the circus.

Nell House
Nell House was built for the chapter of Trier Cathedral by Johann Marx and his wife Elisabeth Arnoldi in 1733. It had a series of religious and secular residents until the French Revolution, which put an end to feudalism in the Moselle region and elsewhere. The Empire-style, oak front door is especially beautiful, and the house also has a delightful park and baroque garden.

Mettlach
Mettlach, the famous ceramics town, is tucked away in the delightful, romantic valley of the Saar. The Villeroy & Boch company has its headquarters in the Old Abbey. The Old Tower, a Saarland landmark, is the region's oldest preserved religious building. St. Ludwin's Church in Mettlach, also known as Mettlach Cathedral, was built in Rhenish-Romanesque style around the turn of the 20th century. The architect was Ludwig Becker of Mainz. It has intricate mosaics on the floor, walls and chancel ceiling.
