In the footsteps of the Romans
This impressive, 7.5 hectare, Gallo-Roman settlement was built towards the end of the 1st century AD. With its reconstructed manor house, villa baths and taverna, it provides a remarkably vivid experience of the Romans' lifestyle and architecture. This amazing estate was discovered around a hundred years ago. It is one of the most extensive Roman villa sites in the Saar-Moselle region.

The Old Abbey in Mettlach an der Saar was acquired by Jean-François Boch in 1809. Mettlach's favourable location on the river Saar and the region's plentiful supplies of wood and coal - required, in those days, for ceramics manufacture - transformed the town into an industrial centre. The Keravision exhibition and the Museum of Ceramics next door in the Old Abbey bring the history of the Villeroy & Boch company to life.
