Visitors are positively encouraged to touch and try things out at this large, family-friendly, interactive museum and outdoor site. Learning is fun with so many exciting experiments on light, sound, energy and mechanics. Museum of Underwater Archaeology, Sassnitz
The Museum of Underwater Archaeology is the first museum of its kind in Germany. On display are underwater finds from Germany's Baltic Sea coast and information about the excavation methods used in archaeological diving. The most significant find the Gellen wreck dates from the days of the pirate Klaus Störtebeker. The preserved starboard side is all that remains of this Hanseatic-era cargo ship that sank off the island of Hiddensee en route from Öland in Sweden. The cog's construction is unique because it combines Baltic and mediterranean craft traditions. "Boot II" from Ralswiek (Rügen) is also of great historical significance. It was built around 995 AD and is considered a model for research into Slavic shipbuilding.
