Sassnitz, with its town harbour and ferry terminal, is considered the gateway to Scandinavia. Locals and visitors alike flock to the atmospheric harbour with its fishing boats, yachts, trawlers, passenger ferries and pleasure boats. Sassnitz's harbour wall (1,450 metres) goes further out to sea than any other on Rügen.
Cape Arkona is a sheer, 45-metre chalk cliff at the north-eastern tip of the Wittow peninsula. It is one of Rügen's most popular visitor attractions and its two lighthouses can be seen for miles around. It forms a preservation site together with the former imperial bearing tower, the picture-book village of Vitt and the remains of a Slavic castle, the Jaromarsburg. The lighthouse designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel is now the oldest on the Baltic coast (1826/1827). Its observation platform offers panoramic views of the island.
With its long beach of fine sand and its delightful villa architecture, Binz is one of the largest and most attractive seaside resorts on Rügen. This former imperial spa resort has now been restored to its former glory, and exudes all the glamour and prestige of the belle époque. Binz's magnificent white villas, built around the turn of the 20th century, are a fascinating blend of styles from various eras: Renaissance, baroque, classicism and art nouveau. With their elaborate white façades, intricate verandas, balconies and bay windows, they create a delightful atmosphere in the town. The majestic triple-wing spa building on the beach opposite the pier (370 metres long) is also worth seeing.
