Natureza e áreas verdes

Small villages, fertile marshland, green meadows and grazing sheep are the hallmarks of the peninsula. One highlight not to be missed is a guided tour of the mudflats in the Schleswig-Holstein Wattenmeer National Park, which enables visitors to experience the unspoilt natural landscape of dunes, beaches and salt marshes. Children in particular adore the West Coast Park and Robbarium (seal centre).

Schleswig-Holstein Wattenmeer National Park
The Wattenmeer, which stretches from Holland to Denmark, is one of the last remaining extensive natural landscapes in central Europe. Indeed, the Schleswig-Holstein Wattenmeer National Park is the largest national park in central Europe. The coastal mudflats, the strip of land between the high and low water marks which is covered at high tide and accessible when the tide recedes, are one of the most fascinating natural habitats in the world. One cubic metre of their mud contains more biomass than the same amount of soil in a tropical rain forest.

West Coast Park and Robbarium Seal Centre, St. Peter-Ording
At West Coast Park visitors can discover the area's fascinating geography and the flora and fauna of the coastal region. Large areas of the park are completely natural. The harbour-style Robbarium offers fascinating insights into the habitat of the seal. It is Germany's largest seal centre and can accommodate over 800 hand-reared and wild seals. The adjoining rock is an important breeding colony for the northern gannet. The park also has an animal petting area, a pony rides enclosure and a children's playground with an inflatable bouncer, climbing poles, a slide and a lookout tower.

Katinger Watt nature conservation area
The Katinger Watt nature conservation area has quiet paths through woodland and along the water's edge. A natural paradise virtually created out of the sea, it consists of a bird sanctuary, peaceful woodland and areas for agricultural use. It is a habitat for small game, and countless sea birds nest and rest in special reserves. In spring and autumn it has thousands of ducks, barnacle geese and sandpipers passing through.
