A "Haubarg" is a type of farmhouse found only on the Eiderstedt peninsula. These are grand, generously proportioned buildings designed for hay storage and to provide living quarters for men and animals. The "Red Haubarg" in Witzwort is the oldest farmhouse of its kind and the only one open to the public. The historical "Red Haubarg" farmhouse in Witzwort is the largest and the oldest one of its kind (1647). In spite of its name, it is actually a white building. Haubarg (haystack) farmhouses are unique to the Eiderstedt peninsula. Built many years ago by the Dutch for the local farming community, they provided accommodation for both people and animals. Around 45 of these vast farmhouses still survive today. Some have been converted into well-appointed holiday apartments, others provide an atmospheric setting for restaurants, cafés and art galleries.St. Lawrence's Church in Tönning
St. Lawrence's Church dominates the skyline of the seaside health resort of Tönning. Its imposing west tower, a baroque domed spire, can be seen for miles. The oldest part of the church (the north wall) dates back to the 12th century. St. Lawrence's has some important art treasures, including a work by the baroque painter Jürgen (Yurian) Ovens, who was born in Tönning in 1623. The church spire is lit up at night.
