Trier is Germany's oldest town, and was once the second capital of the Roman Empire. The grand buildings left behind by the Romans still bear witness to their lifestyle. But other cultures also left their mark, including the Celts, the Franks, the French and the Prussians. Nine of the historical buildings have been listed by UNESCO as world heritage.
Koblenz lies on the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle. The point at which the two rivers meet is marked by the sharp triangle known as "Deutsches Eck (German Corner)". The imposing Ehrenbreitstein fortress above the town, one of Europe's largest castles, and the romantic Stolzenfels Castle near Koblenz form the gateway to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, also a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the legendary and mythical Loreley and the romantic castles and palaces on the steep cliffs above the Rhine.
Not far from Cochem are the two quaint villages of Beilstein and Ediger-Eller, each well worth a visit. And for something completely different, head for the Nürburgring, the world-famous Formula 1 racetrack, 40km from Cochem in the Eifel region. The motor sport is exciting and varied, the surrounding countryside beautiful.
