To mark Hannover's 750th anniversary, a permanent exhibition has been created tracing the development of the city from the original settlement known as "to den hogen overen" to its present incarnation as a major urban centre. The Regional History section of the museum documents the development from the principality of Calenberg in around 1600 to the end of the Kingdom of Hannover in 1866.Wilhelm Busch Museum
The museum has 160 works by the painter, cartoonist and writer Wilhelm Busch, plus a collection of caricatures. Many people come to the Sprengel Museum especially to see the works by Hannover's honorary citizen on display under the title "La Fête". Some of the works bequeathed to the city by this French artist on her death are featured in the museum's permanent collection.
